Kate McDermott, PT, DPT
Kate is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified GYROTONIC trainer. She holds Bachelors of Exercise Science and Doctorate of Physical Therapy degrees from Simmons University in Boston, MA. She has been practicing as a licensed Physical Therapist since 2013. She has been a certified GYROTONIC trainer since 2008.
Like many PT’s, Kate was introduced to the profession of Physical Therapy as an athlete. As an elite competitive ice dancer, she sustained a hip injury while training which required surgery. She was able to travel to Colorado to be treated by one of the best hip surgeons in the world. While she was there, she discovered a love for the mountains and was inspired by the Physical Therapists who treated her. She got a taste of what good post-operative rehabilitation looked like. Fortunately, the good care didn’t end when she got home to Boston. Her team consisted of a married couple with side by side businesses. Her team was her Physical Therapist who was a former Olympic ice dancer and her ballet teacher turned GYROTONIC trainer. Kate recovered fully. She was able to return to compete at the US National Championships with her partner the following season and continues to live a life without hip pain.
Her ballet teacher introduced her to The GYROTONIC method when she was just 15 years old and it quickly became a regular part of her training. When her competitive skating career ended, she began working as an aide in a PT clinic and started the journey to become a certified GYROTONIC trainer. By the time she was in PT school and ready for her first clinical affiliation she was fully certified. She arranged for her clinical experience to be in a GYROTONIC studio under the direct supervision of a Physical Therapist and Master Trainer.
Her final clinical experience for PT school was in Utah. Here she unexpectedly fell in love with treating the neurologic population. She was hired immediately upon graduating and spent the next 5 years working for Neuroworx, an outpatient non-profit organization specializing in treating spinal cord injury and paralysis.
In 2018, she decided to move back to New England to connect with family and explore other avenues of Physical Therapy. She spent a year and a half working various jobs including the spinal cord injury floor at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, teaching clients at Gyrotonic Boston Central and returning to private practice orthopedics at Elements Center in Washington, DC.
She returned to Utah in 2020 where she has worked for Rehab without Walls, Intermountain Healthcare and Movement Design Lab. She decided to fully devote herself to Sports and Orthopedics in 2022 and embarked on an 18 month Orthopedic Residency Program at Motion UT. She has mentored numerous Physical Therapy students over the years as a clinical instructor. She opened Inside Edge Physical Therapy & Movement in 2023.
She is passionate about the rehabilitation benefit of GYROTONIC and spreading awareness among the rehab community. She is devoted to providing quality of care. She seeks out education where ever she can with the motivation to be the best provider she can for her patients. Kate likes to play hard and some of the greatest lessons she has learned are through her own unfortunate injuries and surgeries. She aims to treat every patient with as much kindness, skill and attention as she would want her own family member or friend to be treated.
